Ariel Small Cap Value returned 17.04% net in Q2 2026, matching the Russell 2000 Value Index as U.S. equities rebounded sharply with their strongest quarterly gains since 2020. The portfolio benefited from strong performance in travel, entertainment and medical devices holdings. Lindblad Expeditions led gains with robust demand, record occupancy and sustained pricing strength in luxury adventure travel. Sphere Entertainment advanced on solid earnings and improving operating fundamentals as demand for immersive experiences drove margin expansion. The manager initiated positions in Haemonetics Corporation, a medical devices company positioned to benefit from favorable demographics and rising demand for plasma-based therapies, and Masco Corporation, the largest U.S. plumbing fixtures manufacturer with strong brands and margin expansion potential. Detractors included Core Laboratories, pressured by geopolitical tensions and softer drilling activity, and Prestige Consumer Healthcare, impacted by supply constraints. The manager maintains a measured outlook for the second half, acknowledging modest global growth, geopolitical tensions and concentrated market leadership, while remaining focused on long-term value creation through disciplined bottom-up research and valuation discipline as market leadership broadens.
Ariel Small Cap Value seeks to own high-quality small-cap businesses at attractive valuations through rigorous bottom-up fundamental research, emphasizing durable business models, strong balance sheets, capable management teams and sustainable competitive advantages.
The manager enters the second half of 2026 with a measured outlook, acknowledging modest and uneven global growth, ongoing geopolitical tensions, concentrated market leadership in large-cap technology, and consumer pressures from higher borrowing costs and inflation. Despite these headwinds, the focus remains on long-term value creation through bottom-up research and valuation discipline, seeking to capitalize on opportunities as market leadership broadens and company-specific fundamentals become more important.

John W. Rogers, Jr. founded Ariel Investments in 1983 at age 24 with $10,000 from friends and family, building it into the largest minority-run mutual fund firm in the United States. Born in Chicago in 1958, he graduated from Princeton University in 1980 where he studied economics and captained the basketball team. His investment passion began at age 12 when his father bought him stocks instead of toys. Rogers serves on prominent corporate boards including McDonald's, Nike, and The New York Times Company, and has extensive civic involvement including vice chair of University of Chicago's board of trustees. He co-chaired Barack Obama's 2009 Presidential Inaugural Committee and serves on the Obama Foundation board. Rogers has received numerous honors including Princeton's Woodrow Wilson Award and recognition alongside Warren Buffett in 'The World's 99 Greatest Investors.'
Ariel's investment philosophy emphasizes finding unrecognized value in small and medium-sized companies, investing with a margin of safety, mitigating risk through integrated sustainability analysis, and maintaining a long-term, contrarian mindset. The firm seeks value amongst small- and medium-sized companies that are widely misunderstood, ignored and/or underfollowed. Their approach involves first finding the businesses they want to own and then patiently waiting for the right entry price - one with an ample margin of safety. Maximizing shareholder returns is more than just math, as they integrate all material issues, including sustainability-related factors. Their job is to drown out the noise and think long-term, looking past today's turbulence to see tomorrow's possibilities as disciplined, value investors.
Lead Portfolio Manager
Moderate Conviction Bullish
Market Conviction
The letter names 11 individual positions with substantive commentary, providing specific thesis summaries for each holding including performance drivers, operational details and forward expectations. Position sizes are disclosed (ranging from 1.4% to 4.0%), and the manager uses declarative language about specific holdings such as 'we see a clear path to sustained growth' and 'we believe the company remains well positioned.' However, the portfolio appears diversified across multiple sectors and holdings, and some hedging language is present ('we believe,' 'in our view'). The manager discusses multiple scenarios in the macro section and acknowledges uncertainty. This is a moderate conviction letter with clear theses per holding but not the extreme concentration or unhedged language that would warrant a score above 0.75.
Growth Outlook
Market outlook remains moderate conviction: Ariel Small Cap Value delivered +3.03% net returns in Q4, closely tracking its benchmark. The fund added defensive quality names like FactSet and RLI, while taking a cautious stanc...
Risk Appetite
Risk appetite posture is moderate conviction: Ariel Small Cap Value delivered +3.03% net returns in Q4, closely tracking its benchmark. The fund added defensive quality names like FactSet and RLI, while taking a cautious stanc...
Capital Deployment
The manager initiated two new positions (Haemonetics and Masco) and exited three positions (Kennametal, nVent, Hackett) during the quarter. Two of the three exits were for non-fundamental reasons (nVent grew beyond market cap range, Hackett exited to pursue other opportunities), and one was on valuation (Kennametal). This represents capital rotation rather than net deployment or de-risking, as proceeds from sales were used to fund new purchases. No cash level changes are disclosed, and the letter does not indicate net new cash being put to work or raised. This is rotation activity, which scores near neutral with a slight positive tilt for the two new initiations.
Forward Guidance
Forward guidance signal: Ariel Small Cap Value delivered +3.03% net returns in Q4, closely tracking its benchmark. The fund added defensive quality names like FactSet and RLI, while taking a cautious stanc...
Language Signal
The letter contains substantial bullish language around individual holdings: robust demand, strong earnings beats, attractive valuations, compelling paths for sustained growth, clear paths to multiple expansion, and attractive long-term growth trajectories. However, this is balanced by bearish language in the macro section: modest and uneven growth, ongoing geopolitical tensions, market volatility, concentrated leadership increasing valuation sensitivity, and consumer pressures from higher borrowing costs and persistent inflation. The stock-specific language is more bullish than the macro language is bearish, but the balance is not overwhelming. Net directional language tilts moderately positive.
Perceived Risk
Perceived risk level is evaluated as above average conviction. Ariel Small Cap Value delivered +3.03% net returns in Q4, closely tracking its benchmark. The fund added defensive quality names like FactSet and RLI, while taking a cautious stanc...
Opportunity Density
The manager initiated two new positions during the quarter and describes seeking to capitalize on opportunities as market leadership broadens and company-specific fundamentals become more important. The language suggests selective opportunities in defined areas rather than a broad or rich opportunity set. The manager notes that performance dispersion remained significant, reinforcing the importance of fundamental research, which implies opportunities exist but require selectivity. The measured outlook and emphasis on valuation discipline suggests the manager sees a handful of good ideas but characterizes the environment as requiring selectivity rather than being abundant with opportunities.
Time Horizon
The manager explicitly states they remain focused on the long term and emphasizes long-term value creation rather than short-term macroeconomic forecasts. The investment approach is described as grounded in durable business models, strong balance sheets and sustainable competitive advantages, all of which imply a multi-year thesis. For individual holdings, the manager uses language like 'attractive long-term growth trajectory' and 'long-term earnings power,' indicating 2-5 year expectations for value realization. However, the letter also discusses quarterly earnings results and near-term catalysts for several holdings, suggesting some catalyst dependency within a 1-3 year timeframe. This is a multi-year thesis with some near-term milestone tracking, typical of a public equities fund with quarterly reporting.
