The fund is co-managed by Ross Glotzbach, CFA, who serves as CEO and Head of Research at Southeastern Asset Management, and Mason Hawkins, CFA, Chairman and founder who established the firm in 1975. Hawkins has received Institutional Investor's Lifetime Achievement Award and brings nearly five decades of value investing expertise. Southeastern Asset Management has been in the business of value equity investing for five decades and created the Longleaf Partners Funds in 1987 as a way for employees to invest alongside clients. The firm is 100% employee-owned with employees being the largest shareholders, creating strong alignment with client interests. The company maintains global presence with offices in Memphis (headquarters), London, Singapore, and Sydney and is a signatory of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).
The Longleaf Partners Global Fund seeks to generate superior long-term investment returns and minimize the risk of permanent capital loss by investing primarily in a concentrated number of global companies that meet their Business, People, Price investment criteria. The fund invests with a three-to-five-year investment horizon and takes advantage of short-term volatility to own high quality businesses, run by capable management teams, whose stock prices are believed to be trading temporarily at a discount. The firm defines risk primarily as the possibility of permanent capital loss rather than short-term volatility. They expect to pay no more than 60% of conservative appraisal value and assess company value based on a conservative view of the next 7 years with an average holding period of 5 years. The investment approach is fundamentally bottom-up business appraisal focused on financially strong, competitively entrenched, well-managed companies bought at prices significantly below business value.
