Dear Reader,For years now my biggest opportunity — given my broad watchlist — has been to simply stay on top of an earning’s calendar. There’s really no excuse not to these days, especially during peak earnings season. The market gets wrapped up in insane narratives intra-quarter and one could theoretically make a lot of money just showing up to a few earnings plays every quarter. With that said, let’s proceed. I also have a micro-pitch for Kion Group, a German forklift manufacturer and warehouse robotics company.Earnings Calendar Highlights: MondayPre-Market:Barrick Mining (B US): Could set the tone for a follow-up rally in smaller gold mining namesJerash (JRSH US): Jordanian clothing manufacturer microcap has been surging off a huge base, but their largest customer, VFC, has had weak price action. I would be interested in reacting quickly to a big beat / guidance / new contract win.Post-Market:Upwork (UPWK US): Freelancing platform that’s viewed as an AI loser, trading at “value” multiples. Peer Fiverr reported disappointing results. If Upwork can differentiate itself and show some legs, it could have a lot of upside. Entravision (EVC US): Has been popular on twitter lately for massive growth in its advertising platform, led by a new relationship with Tencent. Hallador Energy (HNRG US): I’m long. Stock has been getting beat up alongside other independent power companies despite its idiosyncratic story. Market is maybe concerned about upcoming dilution to fund the natural gas expansion / turbines. Optex Systems (OPXS US): Defense microcap has been running out of steam. This is another good candidate for acting quickly if they deliver a solid beat.TuesdayPre-Market:Amentum (AMTM US): Defense/nuclear contractor. Sounds sexy but people tell me it’s not really a high-quality business. Post-Market:Owlet (OWLT US): baby-monitoring company. One of my analysts is pretty bullish. To me the street estimates are kind of a tough sell, but if they deliver a solid beat / guidance that could quickly change everything.WednesdayPost-Market:Crown Crafts (CRWS US): baby products microcap. Long-term dividend payer. Has been under pressure for a while and trying to make up for lost traction with acquisitions.Epsilon Energy (EPSN US): I’m long. With all the CEO buys and the oil price spike, if this company can’t deliver on earnings I just might be permanently done with E&P microcaps. ThursdayPre-Market:Alliance Laundry (ALH US): Speed Queen. I’ve heard these guys are super high quality operators. Seems fairly priced but I’m just kind of interested to see how they’re doing.Arco Dorados (ARCO US): McDonald’s master franchisee in Latin America. I more or less gave up on this one a while ago when I concluded that being a master franchisee simply isn’t a great business model, but I like to know how they’re doing.Nomad Foods (NOMD US): Frozen food. Based in Europe. Lots of debt. Trading at 6.5x forward earnings. Coming off a depressed chart. I feel like this could be good for a small punt ahead of earnings. Innovative Solutions and Support (ISSC US): I’m long, with covered calls. This microcap aerospace aggregator has been executing on bolt-on strategy. The market will be looking for more detail about the financials of recent deals. Post-Market:Laird Superfoods (LSF US): Interesting microcap with interesting products. Unfortunately it might just be sub-scale. FridayOlvi Oyj (OLVAS HE): This small cap is one of the most interesting beverage stocks, with a track record of solid growth, at <10x fwd earnings. A major reason for the current discount is capital controls in Belarus. WildcardsI couldn’t get confirmation on defense microcaps TAYD/CVU or property developer/manager CHCI. Out of those, I’m most interested in picking up a CHCI position ahead of earnings, as they have been reporting lots of progress.Micro-pitch: Kion Group (KIGRY US, KGX DE)Kion Group is the world’s second largest forklift manufacturer (after Toyota). They also have an IAS (intelligent automation solutions) segment for automating warehouses/fulfillment center activity. Namely, one of the products/solutions is a robot that picks stuff out for fulfillment. As you can see on the chart, the market got really excited about this stock’s potential when Amazon was going bonkers with its post-covid fulfillment center buildout strategy. Then Amazon pulled back on capex and the stock tanked. Other customers came in to fill a lot of the gap, but broader weakness in the forklift market has lead to a stock pullback. The opportunity is that IAS could be re-accelerating on the back of a recent Amazon order. At 9x forward earnings consensus in a hot field (robotics), I think the risk:reward is solid here. The biggest risks are Amazon failing to make sufficient follow-on orders and general competition from China.I currently have a small position.
