Quick Take
"The fund returned 3.16% in Q2 2025, underperforming its benchmark due to gaming and chemical sector exposure and an underweight position in lower-quality CCC bonds. The manager remains constructive on the asset class and views potential softness as an opportunity to add risk."
Executive Summary
The abrdn High Income Opportunities Fund posted a return of 3.16% for its Institutional Class shares during the second quarter ended June 30, 2025. This performance trailed the fund's benchmark, the ICE BofA US High Yield Constrained Index, which returned 3.58% over the same three-month period. Performance detraction was primarily driven by exposure to the gaming sector, including Affinity Gaming, as well as selection issues in the chemical sector, specifically Braskem Netherlands Finance. On the positive side, performance was buoyed by the cable and satellite sector, where Connect Finco stood out as a key contributor, and by the building materials sector. In terms of credit quality, the fund's underweight allocation to lower-quality CCC-rated bonds proved detrimental when those assets surged during the post-tariff market rebound, although its positions in higher-quality BB and BBB-rated bonds acted as performance stabilizers. The broader market experienced a volatile second quarter, initially shaken by the US administration's 'Liberation Day' tariffs in April, which pushed spreads to a peak of 450 basis points. Markets subsequently recovered in May and June due to receding trade tensions, supportive Treasury yields, and benign macroeconomic indicators. Looking forward, the investment team expects an increase in bond issuance across both US and European markets, which could reduce technical support. However, they remain constructive on the high-yield asset class over a medium-term horizon, intending to use any near-term softness or market volatility as an opportunistic entry point to selectively add risk back into the portfolio.
