Quick Take
"The PM Capital Global Companies Fund recorded a flat 0.7% return for Q4 2024 as strong performances from financials and industrials were balanced by short-term weakness in commodities. The managers rotated capital into new positions in Sanofi and Pernod Ricard while maintaining high currency hedges."
Executive Summary
The PM Capital Global Companies Fund delivered a flat net-of-fees performance of 0.7% over the December 2024 quarter, compared to the MSCI World Net Total Return Index (AUD) return of 11.9%. Over the past year, the Fund achieved a strong return of 21.0%. Positive contributions to the portfolio's performance came from long-term holdings Apollo Global Management, Airbus, and various US bank positions. However, these gains were offset by weaker performance among commodity investments, including Newmont, Teck Resources, and Freeport-McMoRan, which faced headwinds from a strong US Dollar post-US election and questions regarding the efficacy of China's economic stimulus. Believing the US Dollar is now fully valued, PM Capital continues to hedge the majority of its USD exposure back to the Australian Dollar. During the quarter, the managers initiated new positions in French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi and spirits producer Pernod Ricard. They also increased their holding in French engineering firm SPIE and added to gold miner Newmont during price weakness. Meanwhile, positions in Charles Schwab Corp were completely exited, as favourable market dynamics were deemed fully priced in.
