Quick Take
"FPA New Income Fund returned -1.08% in Q4 2024 and 4.59% for the full year. The manager is taking advantage of higher yields in longer-duration High Quality bonds while reducing exposure to expensive, narrow-spread credit instruments."
Executive Summary
FPA New Income Fund returned -1.08% for the fourth quarter of 2024 and 4.59% for the full year ended December 31, 2024. During the quarter, the bond market recalibrated its expectations for the future path of interest rates following the Federal Reserve's rate cuts and the outcome of the presidential election, which introduced policy uncertainty regarding tariffs, immigration, and federal indebtedness. Consequently, Treasury yields beyond one year increased by 60-83 bps. The Fund continues to see attractive opportunities in longer-duration, High Quality bonds (rated single-A or higher) to enhance long-term returns, while actively reducing credit risk due to historically narrow spreads. The manager views current high-yield spreads as extremely expensive (in the 4th to 14th percentiles historically) and not offering adequate compensation for credit and mark-to-market risk. Portfolio activity reflected this stance, with the Fund selling lower-rated corporate bonds and ABS to reinvest in Treasuries, increasing Treasury exposure to 13.5% from 10.3% in the previous quarter. The Fund continues to rely on its 100 bps duration test to identify absolute value and manage short-term downside return potential.
