Jackson Peak Capital LLC Patrick O'Brien | “One of these is Confluent (CFLT) – our largest position at the end of Q3. Confluent is a data infrastructure software firm. It offers a data streaming platform that helps companies stream, connect, process and govern their data. These capabilities are increasingly valuable and strategic in the age of AI. We built a position in August after the stock fell ~35% post-earnings. We shared our detailed event-driven thesis with our investors and distribution list in August (see link here for the presentation). We outlined our view that it was an asymmetric opportunity: an acquisition target with takeout indicators flashing and statistically cheap. Confluent (CFLT) was a contributor as an event-driven position. As noted above, we initiated a significant position in CFLT during the quarter as an event-driven trade. Part of the conviction in the sizing of the position was CFLT's statistical cheapness and, regardless of the event path, a higher probability that the stock would revert upwards rather than continue lower. The mean reversion aspect of the trade began to play out during Q3. BSD Analysis: Confluent provides a mission-critical data streaming platform with durable growth drivers as enterprises modernize their architectures for AI and real-time analytics. Shares fell sharply on earnings, compressing valuation to levels that make it attractive on both standalone fundamentals and as an acquisition target—EV/sales and EV/gross profit multiples trade at discounts to peers despite strong net retention and cloud growth. The company is pushing toward improved operating leverage, with margin expansion expected as cloud mix increases and the cost base normalizes. Given accelerating data infrastructure spending tied to AI, Confluent's strategic relevance to acquirers such as hyperscalers or large software vendors is high; insider ownership and prior M&A interest increase the odds of a takeout scenario. Key catalysts include revenue reacceleration, progress toward free-cash-flow break-even, and any indications of strategic interest. Primary risks include competitive pressure from open-source Kafka alternatives, macro IT spending weakness, and multiple compression if growth slows further.” | BULL | Q3 2025 Nov 1, 2025 | View Pitch |
