MJG Capital Fund Matt Geiger | “Lara Exploration was the Featured Investment in the January 2020 MJG partnership letter. The position was first initiated in November 2019 at C$0.44, with subsequent open market purchases lifting the MJG cost basis to C$0.67 per share. Despite limited news flow, the Lara share price has advanced 62% YTD – continuing its relentless climb that began in early 2024. While Lara still retains an active prospect generation business, the company's prospects will continue to hinge on its 100%-owned Planalto Copper Project in the Carajás Mineral Province of Brazil. In early April, Lara closed a C$33.75 million financing by issuing 11,250,000 units at C$3.00 per share with no warrant sweetener. This marks the company's largest financing since inception by a factor of seven and is particularly impressive considering that Lara last raised money at C$0.65 in June 2022. Company insiders took down a healthy C$1.5 million in the offering, while Atalaya Mining – a US$1.7 billion European copper producer – joined the Lara register by subscribing for C$13.5 million. This is Atalaya's first significant investment outside of Europe, with the company now a 7.3% shareholder in Lara. The market reacted positively both to the strength of the financing as well as the unexpected entrance of Atalaya, with the Lara share price trading up to C$4.00 within two weeks of its close. This leaves Lara sufficiently capitalized to push Planalto through a Prefeasibility Study, and the company is wasting no time in putting the financing proceeds to work. In late June, Lara surprised the market by announcing that it was already more than 75% through a 14,000-meter drill program, with seven drill rigs operating on site. In their typically understated manner, the Lara team has created over C$200 million in value at Planalto since Capstone handed back the project in late 2023. Planalto continues to be a prime M&A candidate for any midtier miner seeking a no-frills copper development asset with near-term production potential. Whether the ultimate buyer is Atalaya Mining or another player who has yet to enter the fold, the MJG partnership plans to be there through the end game.” | NEUTRAL | Q2 2026 Aug 7, 2026 | View Pitch |
