As an update on $VRSN, they released a very strange 8-K on Friday, rebuking the Google AdSense bear case that has been circulating post my longer form notes posted to VIC. Given the phrasing of the “short seller’s faulty and incorrect analysis”, I can only assume that they were mentioning the VIC post ~2 weeks ago. Anyways, spending some time this weekend, I have little faith that the domains impacted will actually be 2% given previous disclosure by their own CEO alongside other industry sources, and find the entire situation strange. As a refresher, one of my initial points was that Google’s recent AdSense changes are reducing the major income source for parked domains, which make up ~30% of .Com domains today. $VRSN claims these can be bucketed into registrants with no website, resellers, and advertisers, but historically the company’s own CEO has stated these groups are hard to separate and any measure would be speculative. Despite this, $VRSN reported a precise 2% figure in an 8-K released on a Friday. I believe the analysis likely relied on nameserver activity, which is unreliable. For example, $HOOD DARTs for July/Aug was 2.6 mil vs 2.4 mil for 1H. These meme warriors are VERY profitable for $VIRT. Check out co's profitability in 2020/21. Meme stocks were very active in 3Q and it's continued into 4Q (see: $BYND). So if $0.95 3Q EPS for $VIRT is wrong, what's it going to be? I ran a simple caveman model and came up with ~$1.40. My confidence interval is wide ($1.20-$1.60) but point is I think it'll be far higher than Street est. It's worth noting that Street est range is very wide. One last thing that can re-rate $VIRT is shareholder returns. Historically, mgmt has been very good steward of shareholder cap. In addition to $0.96 annual div, mgmt has repurchased ~19% of stock over last 5 yrs. Mgmt essentially returns all earnings to shareholders. What's different is that $VIRT has just reloaded. On Sept 23, it raised $300 mil by issuing a TL. Most likely UoF is stock BB. Acquisition is unlikely. Mgmt tends to buy asset during market dislocation & we're far from that now. This $300 mil BB alone is worth ~6% of MC. To wrap up, $VIRT is too cheap at ~7x P/E. Concerns about new CEO & weak 3Q are misplaced. Upcoming catalysts are (i) investors get comfy with new CEO, (ii) old CEO doesn't dump stock as low price, (iii) 3Q earnings (Oct 29 pre-market) blowout, & (iv) YUGE stock BB in 4Q. I forgot to mention something. It's fair to say that $VIRT is 'over-earning' right now. Co is cyclical and current market conditions are above mid-cycle. So 7x P/E might be based on peak earnings. So what does P/E look like on mid-cycle basis? $VIRT mgmt mentioned on 1Q '23 earnings that average adj. net trading income (co's main KPI) was ~$6 mil/day PF for ITG & KCG acquisitions. Since then $VIRT has invested in new growth markets (options, ETFs, crypto, etc). These growth initiatives have added $1.3 mil. Combining historical ANTI/day of $6 mil+$1 mil growth results in ~$7 mil mid-cycle ANTI. $VIRT occasionally provides EPS sensitivity to ANTI. So mid-cycle EPS is $4.16. At my cost ($33.80), mid-cycle P/E is only 8.1x. Very cheap for consistently profitable, S/H friendly company. BofA out with a timely upgrade on $VIRT. Expects 3Q EPS of $1.20 vs Street est $0.95 & my ~$1.40. Also notes that investor concerns re low equity vol in 3Q is overblown due to high retail engagement. Sounds familiar to me... 😏 Sold all $VIRT @ $33.73 (-0.3% on my cost). 3Q earnings were good ($1.05 or +11% vs Street) but far below my estimate. More importantly, new CEO is pivoting from stock BB to retaining capital to fund organic growth. That's not what I signed up for so I'm out. $VIRT has been public for ~10 yrs and I have not detected any degradation in ROC. Bid/ask spreads do get tighter as a market goes from analog to electronic but volume also increases dramatically. And, as US equities mature, other markets open up (options, bonds, int'l, etc).

Ok, so time to get serious on $NTLA. It is going to single digits. Total operating expenses in 1H25 were >$261M. That means that at the moment, they would have ~$500M cash. 107.3M shares outstanding means ~$4.66/share is cash value. BOTH of their lead programs have now had G4 liver events, with today's event also having elevated bilirubin. This means Hy's law was met. If you don't know what that is, read up. This is OVER. These programs should be stopped, as both HAE and ATTR have multiple SAFE and highly efficacious treatment options. Hy's law tells us that if they move forward (and somehow get the FDA to approve) with these drugs, they are going to kill someone. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE when the diseases already have safe/effective treatment options. This was a cool science experiment, but we are done here. Cash per share by the end of the year is in the $3s. They have no advanced-stage drug candidates to replace these now dead lead programs (HAE and ATTR). It doesn't matter how 'good' the efficacy data from these programs looks at upcoming updates. These drugs are. not. safe. The risk/benefit here is not acceptable. IDK if it is Cathie Wood or some other ignorant trader who pushed this to the $16s this morning, but it's not going to last.
