Quick Take
"Baron FinTech Fund fell 4.29% in Q3 2025, lagging its benchmark due to a 'junk rally' style headwind. The fund made major moves by initiating a position in Capital One and completely exiting IT consulting names over AI concerns, ahead of its planned conversion to an ETF in December 2025."
Executive Summary
In the quarter ended September 30, 2025, Baron FinTech Fund's Institutional Shares fell 4.29%, underperforming the FactSet Global FinTech Index (-1.90%). Underperformance was driven by a 'junk rally' style factor where riskier, lower-quality stocks outperformed, as well as overblown market concerns regarding Generative AI disintermediation of enterprise software and info services. Positive offsets came from capital markets holdings (Robinhood, Interactive Brokers). During the quarter, the fund made a significant purchase of Capital One Financial Corp, viewing its Discover acquisition as highly accretive. Conversely, it trimmed its insurance holdings (Progressive, Arch Capital) and completely eliminated Digital IT Services positions due to AI disruption risks. On or about December 12, 2025, the fund will convert into an ETF renamed Baron Financial ETF.
