Mairs & Power - Balanced Fund Mairs & Power, Inc. | “Fiserv (FISV) weighed on relative performance. The company is currently in turnaround mode and recently presented an update on their strategic plan which aims to improve customer satisfaction and to accelerate new product development. Unfortunately, the company's CEO resigned unexpectedly after only 18 months on the job. His replacement, promoted from within, brings an impressive background and alignment with the company's strategic direction. However, this leadership transition added a layer of uncertainty which has weighed on the shares.” | NEUTRAL | Q2 2026 Jul 23, 2026 | View Pitch |
Forager International Shares Fund Steve Johnson | “Fiserv (NASDAQ:FISV) was the single largest detractor this year, costing the Fund 3.9%. A loss of that size isn't just bad luck. It reflects a mistake in our process and we owe a clear account of what went wrong. Back in late 2025, we took a fresh look at the company after the price fell 44%. We thought the incoming CEO, Mike Lyons, was clearing out all of the bad news at once. The theory was that a capable new leadership team could rebuild a business that still generated plenty of cash. So we made the decision to hold on, with a strict condition for staying invested: no more bad news and a clear path back to steady growth by 2027. Those conditions have not been met. Over five quarters, sales growth plummeted from 7% down to zero, and finally into negative territory. By early 2026, its core bank-software business was in decline, it was losing customers, and profit margins had collapsed. We noticed these warning signs as they happened. Noticing a problem is not the same as doing something about it, and that is the core of our mistake. The final straw came in June 2026. After just over a year on the job, the new CEO abruptly announced he was leaving for another company. This was the second leadership shakeup in eight months, a clear signal that the company's problems run much deeper than we thought. The one thing we needed—a stable management team executing a plan—vanished. We have now sold the entire position.” | NEUTRAL | Q2 2026 Jul 15, 2026 | View Pitch |
Hennessy Balanced Fund Neil J. Hennessy | “Fiserv detracted from relative performance as it undergoes a corporate turnaround focused on improving client satisfaction and product development. An unexpected CEO resignation shortly after appointment has introduced substantial leadership uncertainty, overshadowing strategic initiatives and dragging down the stock.” | BEAR | Q2 2026 Jun 30, 2026 | View Pitch |
Broyhill Asset Management Christopher R. Pavese | “Fiserv was our biggest detractor from performance on the year. This was a particularly painful loss because we thought we owned a dominant business with a flawless record of consistent execution, trad” | BULL | Q4 2025 Feb 17, 2026 | View Pitch |
Broyhill Asset Management Christopher R. Pavese | “Fiserv was our biggest detractor from performance on the year. This was a particularly painful loss because we thought we owned a dominant business with a flawless record of consistent execution, trading at a large discount to the market and to its own history. We increased our investment through the first half of the year because we believed the market was overly punitive in assessing short-term headwinds and slowing growth at Clover. As the stock's decline accelerated and the valuation collapsed, we actively questioned what we might be missing, seeking additional context, perspective, and data to stress our assumptions. In hindsight, we over-weighted the probability that the sell-off was driven by competitive dynamics and overlooked the probability of more structural issues beneath the surface. As it turned out, that “flawless execution” was a red flag. We immediately exited the position when we concluded the company was unanalyzable. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is currently navigating a major operational transformation, shifting its focus toward sustainable long-term revenue growth and deeper client integration through its Clover and Carat platforms. While the company has recently recalibrated its near-term guidance to account for increased investment spending, its role as a backbone of global financial services remains fundamentally secure. The ongoing AI transformation in partnership with IBM is expected to unlock significant cost savings and product enhancements over the coming years, positioning Fiserv at the forefront of the fintech evolution. Although current margin pressure reflects a pivot toward operational discipline, the company's robust free cash flow provides the necessary capital to maintain a balanced approach to share repurchases and balance sheet management. As the company moves past this transitional phase, its expanded presence in the merchant-acquiring market should drive a return to historical growth levels.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Feb 17, 2026 | View Pitch |
GreensKeeper Value Fund Michael P. McCloskey | “Our worst performer by far in 2025 was Fiserv Inc., which declined 67.3%. New management revealed that prior double-digit organic growth was inflated by Argentine inflation accounting, with true growth less than half of what was reported. Rather than gaining share, the company had been ceding ground to competitors. Prior management also pressured clients and underinvested in core platforms. We have lowered our intrinsic value estimate, but with the stock trading at 8x earnings and a 13% free cash flow yield, pessimism appears fully priced in. We now view Fiserv as an opportunistic value investment rather than a long-term compounder. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is financial plumbing that only gets noticed when it fails, which is exactly why it's valuable. Core banking, merchant acquiring, and payments software reinforce each other into a sticky ecosystem with brutal switching costs. Growth isn't flashy, but revenue quality is exceptionally high. Investors overlook Fiserv because it lacks a hype cycle. Digital payments deepen its relevance regardless of macro conditions. Margin expansion comes from mix and scale, not cost cutting. Cash flow conversion remains excellent. This is fintech infrastructure, not speculation.” | BEAR | Q4 2025 Jan 23, 2026 | View Pitch |
Ariel Focus Fund Ariel Investments, LLC | “Fiserv, Inc. (FISV), a global leader in payment processing and financial technology, also experienced a pullback during the period, as new CEO Mike Lyons reset growth and profitability expectations, while announcing further leadership changes. Management is actively recalibrating operations to emphasize growth and client value, supported by targeted investments in technology and distribution. While 2026 is likely to serve as a transition year, we believe this dynamic is already reflected in the current valuation. Looking ahead, successful execution of management's strategy should reinforce Fiserv's dominant market position and extensive distribution network, enabling the company to capture long-term growth in digital payments and financial technology. Fiserv's scale, integrated solutions and deep client relationships create high switching costs and durable recurring revenue—hallmarks of a wide-moat business. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is the plumbing behind payments and banking, embedded in everyday transactions. Switching costs are enormous once systems are integrated. Growth is steady, but revenue quality is high. Merchant acquiring and core banking reinforce each other. Margin expansion comes from mix and software. Investors overlook Fiserv because it lacks hype. Digital payments deepen its relevance over time. This is fintech infrastructure, not speculation. Unavoidable businesses compound quietly.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Matrix Dividend Income Matrix Asset Advisors, Inc. | “On the sell side, we exited our position in Fiserv following a surprising earning miss and sharply reduced earnings guidance from the company's new CEO on the third quarter call. The new CEO, who officially assumed that role in July after joining the company in late 2024, explained that after a comprehensive review of the business, he faulted the company's short-term focus, underinvestment, poor financial oversight, and overly optimistic goals. This update brought into question the company's historic financial reports that underpinned our valuation work. While this is a very disappointing outcome, it highlights the importance of diversification. Even with this loss, the portfolio had a very strong year. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is successfully navigating the evolving fintech landscape in 2026, with its Clover and Carat platforms driving double-digit growth in its merchant processing segment. While the stock has seen a neutral consensus recently due to legal headlines regarding legacy fraud class actions, its underlying business fundamentals remain exceptionally strong with a 25% operating margin. Analysts project a median price target of $82, representing a 28% upside as the market refocuses on the firm's 40% earnings per share growth. Management is prioritizing the integration of generative AI into its financial services suite to enhance fraud detection and customer engagement for its banking partners. With a market capitalization of $34 billion and a PEG ratio of just 0.2x, the stock appears significantly undervalued relative to its long-term growth prospects. For investors, Fiserv offers a high-quality entry into the digital payments revolution at a bargain-basement valuation.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Madison Large Cap Fund Joe Maginot, Haruki Toyama, Rich Eisinger | “Fiserv reported disappointing results with revenue declining in its Financial Solutions segment. Furthermore, new management believes the company requires additional investment across its businesses in order to improve its product suite. As a result, we lost conviction in the company's durable growth profile and sold our shares. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is fintech infrastructure that doesn't get headlines because it doesn't break. Its platforms sit underneath banks, merchants, and payment flows that cannot afford downtime. Clover gives Fiserv real SMB leverage, not just legacy processing fees. Switching costs are enormous once institutions are integrated. Growth is steady, margins are improving, and cash flow is real. Competition is intense, but scale and breadth still matter. Management prioritizes returns over hype. This is not a moonshot fintech — it's financial plumbing. Quietly powerful, quietly compounding.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Dodge & Cox Stock Fund David Hoeft | “Consistent with our contrarian approach, we added to the Fund's position in Fiserv, a global leader in payments and financial technology solutions. Over the course of 2025, Fiserv's forward price-to-earnings multiple compressed from a high of 22.5 times to 8.0 times forward earnings at year end, following downward revisions to guidance under new management. Despite the near-term disappointment, we believe that management is taking the right steps to improve the franchise and that its long-term prospects are compelling. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is the plumbing behind payments and banking that nobody notices until it breaks. Switching costs are enormous once integrated. Growth is steady, revenue quality high. Merchant acquiring and core banking reinforce each other. Margin expansion comes from mix, not hype. Investors overlook Fiserv due to lack of narrative flash. Digital payments deepen relevance. This is fintech infrastructure, not speculation. Unavoidable businesses compound.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Forager International Shares Fund Steve Johnson | “This business was a low, GDP-like grower for a long time. Thanks to Covid and some big acquisitions, it looked like something more than that in recent years. Management and investors extrapolated recent growth into the future and the latter (including us) were sorely disappointed when a new CEO arrived in May and, after a few short months, significantly downgraded both revenue and earnings expectations. His predecessor had a strong incentive to dress this business up - he sold more than US$400 million worth of shares shortly after his departure. The new thesis is that Mike Lyons, the new CEO, has an equally strong incentive to set the bar as low as possible. Fiserv's current price is just eight times those newly lowered expectations. We are tipping that he is highly confident of exceeding them. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is a fintech infrastructure leader powering merchants, banks, and financial institutions worldwide. The Clover POS ecosystem continues to scale, driving higher-margin recurring revenue. Fiserv's breadth across payments, core banking, and merchant acquiring creates cross-sell opportunities few competitors can match. Legacy platform modernization is improving operating leverage. Competition is intense, but switching costs remain high for enterprise clients. Free cash flow is robust and supports buybacks. Fiserv is a durable compounder at the heart of global payments.” | BEAR | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Ariel Appreciation Fund John W. Rogers | “Alternatively, Fiserv, Inc. (FISV), a global leader in payment processing and financial technology, experienced a pullback during the period, as new CEO Mike Lyons reset growth and profitability expectations, while announcing further leadership changes. Against the backdrop of an accelerating shift toward digital payments, we see Fiserv as offering a compelling combination of resilience and growth potential. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is the plumbing behind payments, banking, and commerce, quietly embedded in millions of daily transactions. Its strength lies in scale, integration, and switching costs that customers underestimate until they try to leave. Growth isn't flashy, but revenue quality is extremely high. Merchant acquiring, core banking, and payments form a mutually reinforcing ecosystem. Margin expansion comes from mix and software, not heroics. Investors sometimes overlook Fiserv because it lacks a narrative moment. But infrastructure businesses compound by being unavoidable. As digital payments deepen, Fiserv collects tolls. This is fintech without hype — and that's the appeal.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Dec 31, 2025 | View Pitch |
Giverny Capital Asset Management David M. Poppe | “Fiserv is a mission-critical payments and fintech infrastructure provider with deep integration across financial institutions and merchants. While organic growth moderated in parts of 2025, the company continues to generate strong free cash flow and benefit from long-term trends toward digital payments. Clover remains a powerful merchant acquiring platform with expanding functionality. We believe Fiserv's recurring revenue, switching costs, and capital return profile underpin steady compounding. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is financial plumbing that only gets noticed when it breaks. Core banking and payments software sit deep inside institutions that cannot afford disruption. Growth isn't flashy, but retention is brutal and pricing power accumulates quietly. Investors dismiss Fiserv as “old fintech” and miss how digital payments reinforce its relevance. Margin expansion comes from mix and scale, not cost cutting. Cash flow conversion is consistently strong. This is infrastructure software hiding behind a payments label.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Oct 24, 2025 | View Pitch |
Troy Multi-Asset Strategy Sebastian Lyon & Charlotte Yonge | “The greatest mistake is clearly Fiserv. Over more than a decade of ownership, our research suggested Fiserv's 39-year record for annual double-digit compounded earnings growth was sustainable. This assumption was challenged abruptly by the company's third quarter results. These revealed the company had underinvested and pursued sales tactics that were too aggressive, leading to a sudden reset in earnings and a change in management. This came as a shock and we immediately exited the investment. BSD Analysis: Fiserv is the plumbing behind payments and banking. Switching costs are enormous once integrated. Growth is steady, revenue quality elite. Merchant acquiring and core banking reinforce each other. Margin expansion comes from mix shift. Investors ignore it for flashier fintech. Digital payments deepen relevance. This is unavoidable infrastructure. Boring compounds.” | BULL | Q4 2025 Oct 1, 2025 | View Pitch |
Vltava Fund Daniel Gladiš | “Vltava acquired Fiserv after a 40% share price correction caused by slower merchant growth in its Clover platform and lower organic guidance. The fund noted that high prior expectations created a “growth trap” but fundamentals remain intact, with diversified digital payment infrastructure, strong cash generation, and leading positions in ACH and card processing. BSD Analysis: Fiserv has transformed into a fintech-infrastructure powerhouse with leading positions in acquiring, core banking, and digital payments. Clover continues to scale with strong merchant adoption and rising margins. The business throws off enormous cash, and capital return remains aggressive. The market still prices Fiserv at a discount because it lacks the hype of pure-play fintechs. But the fundamentals are far stronger and more durable. This is a stealth compounder disguised as a legacy payments company. A high-quality financial-technology engine with upside.” | BULL | Q3 2025 Oct 1, 2025 | View Pitch |
Ariel Appreciation Fund John W. Rogers | “Global provider of payment processing and financial services technology solutions, Fiserv, Inc. (FI) declined during the quarter amid investor concerns over increased competition and slowing growth. We believe much of the softness reflects weaker non-Clover U.S. small/medium business trends and tough comparisons in Argentina. However, we expect organic growth to reaccelerate, led by strength in the enterprise segment. Clover remains well positioned in the $3 trillion+ U.S. SMB market, supported by strong software capabilities. FI's broader fintech portfolio—including card issuing, digital banking, and embedded finance for clients like DoorDash and Walmart—offers exposure to secular growth drivers. The company continues to generate strong free cash flow and return capital via buybacks. We believe near-term concerns are overstated and view FI as a compelling opportunity to own a leading fintech platform with durable growth potential. BSD Analysis: Fiserv continues to compound quietly but relentlessly, leveraging its broad footprint in acquiring, digital banking, and core processing to deliver steady, high-quality earnings growth. Clover remains the crown jewel, gaining share across SMBs with expanding software monetization and improving unit economics. Bank technology remains sticky and highly recurring, providing an earnings base that offsets competitive noise in merchant acquiring. Operating discipline is strong, and free-cash-flow generation continues to rise as integration efficiencies deepen. Despite its scale, Fiserv is still underappreciated for its mix of resilience and secular growth, trading at a lower multiple than its profitability profile warrants. With digital payments adoption accelerating and Clover scaling into a true platform asset, FI remains one of the strongest long-term compounders in fintech.” | BULL | Q3 2025 Sep 30, 2025 | View Pitch |
Ariel Focus Fund Ariel Investments, LLC | “Fiserv, Inc. (FI), leading global provider of payment processing and financial services technology solutions. The company possesses unmatched scale and cross-selling abilities across its businesses, including its core financial technology solutions, merchant acceptance and payment processing. These innovative technologies are deeply entrenched in client operations, providing attractive and predictable recurring economics representative of a wide moat, high switching cost service business. A recent pullback in the stock provided an attractive entry point. Shares came under pressure due to investor concerns around Clover volumes decelerating. However, the deceleration was due to one-time items and growth is expected to accelerate later this year. In our view, FI offers a rare opportunity to own a best-in-class financial technology business that should benefit from the secular demand for innovative financial technology. BSD Analysis: Fiserv continues to demonstrate why it's one of the most durable payment-infrastructure platforms, combining merchant acquiring, banking technology, and digital payments into a sticky, high-recurring revenue machine. Clover remains a standout asset, delivering strong growth and increasing monetization as it scales with SMBs. The company's cost discipline and ongoing integration efforts continue to expand margins and free cash flow. While competition in acquiring is real, Fiserv's breadth of solutions and deep client relationships provide meaningful insulation. The stock trades below its quality profile, reflecting lingering noise around integration rather than fundamentals. With accelerating digital adoption and strong operating leverage, FI remains a core compounder in fintech infrastructure.” | BULL | Q3 2025 Sep 30, 2025 | View Pitch |
Giverny Capital Asset Management David M. Poppe | “We added to Fiserv during the quarter. In May, Fiserv reported slower growth for its Clover payment processing business – Clover is one of several portable terminals that you may have seen restaurants use to process credit card payments. When Clover grew 8% during the first quarter rather than the expected 10%, the stock dropped by 30%. Again, Mr. Market gets hyper sometimes. Fiserv is one of the most durable growth stories of the past four decades, having grown earnings by at least 10% for 39 straight years. It acts as the primary technology provider to several thousand regional banks. In turn, the banks actively sell Fiserv products like Clover to their customers, allowing them to transmit credit card payments directly to their bank accounts with a full accounting of the day's receipts. Clover itself is only about 15% of Fiserv's total business – the company has a menu of other products that its bank partners sell to their customers – but it has great potential. Even with temporarily slower growth from Clover, Fiserv should grow earnings about 15% this year, to roughly $10 per share. Wall Street analyst consensus calls for EPS of nearly $12 in 2026. We added to the position at about $169 in May and it closed the quarter a bit higher than that. The current price is just over 14x next year's earnings estimate in a market that trades for more than 20x forward estimates. There are certainly competing payment terminals that restaurants and small retailers can buy, but none have a massive installed base of regional banks that actively sell and support the product. BSD Analysis: Fiserv continues to demonstrate durable, long-term compounding characteristics powered by deep bank distribution, high switching costs and a diversified payments and fintech platform. Short-term deceleration in Clover growth appears immaterial relative to enterprise-wide fundamentals. With mid-teens EPS growth projected and shares trading at a discount to the broader market, valuation looks attractive for a business with such consistent earnings and strong competitive positioning. Risks include terminal competition and sensitivity to small-business spending, but Fiserv's installed-base advantage provides resilience.” | BULL | Q2 2025 Jul 11, 2025 | View Pitch |
